Maintaining Healthy Gums
We have found the following tips REALLY help reduce swollen and sensitive gums (gingivitis) while wearing braces and also prevent cavities. Please try to follow these recommendations.
- Brushing 4 times a day (especially after meals) along with using a waterpik once a day, effectively reduces plaque and gingivitis. Remember that brushing alone isn’t enough. Be sure to work the bristles in the areas between the braces and gum tissues. You should feel the bristles pass over your gum tissues. (A Sonic Care tooth brush can be used in place of the brushing/waterpik method of keeping your gums healthy.)
- Colgate Total toothpaste reduces plaque and gingivitis more effectively than any other toothpaste.
- Gargle with Listerine (any flavor) every morning to help kill bacteria.
- Rinse with Phos-Flur every night to help keep your teeth healthy.
- Visit your family dentist more frequently for cleanings. Most dentists recommend a cleaning every 4 months, while wearing braces and fluoride treatments every 6 months.
